then i saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. Revelation 20:11
i came across this passage this weekend and it triggered a whole mess of thoughts. what does it look like for the earth and the sky to flee? as i think about this, it hits me that the tangible world i interact with everyday can be boiled down to this: three primary colors, seven musical notes, and four basic elements. and i interact with these three dimensional fundamentals using only five senses. this is baffling to me, and my brain is sent in multiple directions at this point...all of which leave me in a state of awe (which i rarely experience on a significant and sincere level).
first: i am amazed that we can be given so much from so little. in all the milleniums we have existed as a human race, we are still coming up with new things to do with these components. we have yet to become bored with them. new styles of music still being written. new varieties of art still being created. new technologies still being invented. all from these finite things. what incredible toys we have to entertain us and challenge us. what a brilliant design.
second: the infinite is a lot bigger than i give credit to. add just one color and an entirely new palette of thousands of unimaginable colors exists. add just one note and harmonies we cannot fathom become possible. pull one more dimension out of a cube and the entire world as we know it becomes something completely different. what exists around me now that i am not even aware of, simply because my body and it's abilities cannot assimilate it? perhaps these colors, notes, and dimensions are right in front of me...perhaps i breathe them in every day and don't even know it because i am limited to these five senses.
third: God Himself, the Creator, the Father of it all has access to limitless experience beyond my thoughts' domain...and He delights in me (ps 147:11). this i cannot understand. universes of thoughts i could never even begin to scrape with the entirity of my mind...colors and music and beauty past every imagining i've ever known...all this at His fingertips, and He chooses me. He delights in me.
today i know a little bit more about the fear of God...and today i know a little bit more about awe.
