driving home in the child-packed suburban last night, somehow mary beth and i found ourselves talking about birth, or rather the moments right after. i remember holding my friend's baby just after he was born. it was one of the best and most terrifying feelings i have ever known. as his little helpless body sank and molded into my arms, i experienced a powerful and severe emotional reaction. it was this reaction mary beth and i were talking about...trying to figure out a way to describe it. a wave or a flood were the only words we could conjure to come close to describing it. looking down at him, so fragile and incapable, feelings, like water, overtook me from my feet to my head. i knew in that instant that i would die for this tiny little creature i was holding. i suppose it was love, but it was so much more extreme and inescapable than any other love-like feeling i've felt. it was the most overwhelming, indescribable thing i have ever experienced, and it scared the shit out of me. i gave him back to my friend in the terror of it thinking, if i feel this strongly about this child, this baby that i have no responsibility for, how much more will it consume me when it is my own child in my arms. it is so much bigger than i can guess at.
it was at this point in the conversation when 11-year-old meagan speaks up.
"oh, loisa!" she says, "when you have babies i can help take care of them! and when you have a daughter and she's my age, i can take her shopping and show her how to put on her make-up and hang out with her! we'll be best friends!"
it's impossible not to smile at that. i assure her that i would love nothing more than for her to be an influence and a friend to my little ones. i feel in good cynical form to add, "now all we need is to find me a man."
immediately and with great enthusiasm, she declares, "i'll put up posters!"
and appropriately, spencer chimes in, "they have to say 'wanted' on them!"
so my marketing team is now in place. if i don't end up married by the end of this trip, it will not be to lack of effort on their part.
(have i mentioned how much i flipping love these children?)

How come you didn't blog about me wanting to take care of your kids and my offer to teach them everything I know? Your daughter and I are going to be best friends....and with any luck, she'll grow up to be just like me....hehe.
The only thing that would make this scene better is if Booba wore a suite and a top hat and stood on street corners trying to lure men to come meet you!
Dang I love that family. Tell them I love them and I miss them terribly.
