wrinkles and san diego.

i just read a wrinkle in time for the first time as an adult. i read it a few times as a child (one of my favorites then), but i think i like it even more now. i remember thinking abstractly for the first time after reading...considering the possibility of other dimensions and alternate experiences. and i've always loved it for that reason. i think it was the first book that made me question my own theology, even as a ten-year-old.

reading it this time through has once again sparked that thirst for truth...beyond physical experience and even beyond comfortably-accepted metaphysical experience.

there is one specific creature that l'engle develops that i can't get out of my mind. these creatures have no eyes or ears or mouths. they communicate telepathically and experience their surroundings rather than sense them. the children, who are looking for their friends, attempt to describe them to the creatures, but find it difficult to find explanations beyond "tall" or "blonde" or any physical description.

the creature says "we do not understand. we do not know what things 'look' like. we know what things 'are' like. what a limiting thing this 'seeing' must be."

i can't stop thinking about that. about how wonderful it would/will be to not be limited by senses. i'm grateful for them...i love what they experience and gather for me. but i depend on them far too much. i long and yearn to be far more aware of what things "are" like than i am of what they look or feel like.

i love to know things. i just don't get to very often.

on a lighter and more enjoyable note, i am in san diego enjoying one of the most perfect mornings/afternoons i've had in a while. crepes + rain + earl grey tea + good night's sleep + san diego + carrie dievendorf. it's an equation destined for pleasantness. i'm sighing deeply at the simple enjoyment of it.

happy super bowl sunday. hope yours is going as well as mine is.

So lovely to see you back on the blog! I miss you sweet girl! Yes, you are learning so much and I love to see that! How wonderful that you are figuring out exactly who you are and what you want in life BEFORE you get married! You will NEVER regret this time of being with friends and eating crepes in the rain with a good friend. Nothing is worth more than this day.
Crown Royal awaits you in my home. Let me know when.
